This evening, G and Z were fighting over a toy-- nothing unusual. We put them both in time-outs. Then, I did something I haven't done before: I started a discussion with G about how he could have avoided a fight with his brother, and it turned into a role-playing scenario with me playing the role of the belligerent, unwilling-to-share toddler.
G thought it was fun, and really got into it. I had to throw in a few pointers, though, as he still was unwilling to think of sharing the toy himself at first. Finally, he suggested that we share the toy; of course I said "Me first!" To which he agreed, and we took a few turns with the toy. By this time, we had attracted the attention of Z as well, who came over and watched and laughed.
I don't know if any of this "lesson" will stick with either of them, but at least it ended in laughs rather than tears. I'll have to try it again sometime...
